An Introduction To Recessed Chamber Filter Presses

The plate and frame press are the most fundamental and the conventional type of filter press. The modern version of a filter press uses plates that have recesses and are therefore called recessed chamber filter presses.

Recessed chamber presses are widely popular and used by various industries, including industrial and municipal wastewater to chemical processing, specifically designed for efficient solid/ liquid separation. It utilizes recessed chamber filter plates that form a series of cavities or replacements for the hollow frames of the plate and frame design between them when clamped together.

Let’s discuss the recessed filter press, it's working, and its advantages in detail to better understand them.

What are Recessed Chamber Filter Press and Filter Plates?

Like all the other filter presses, recessed chamber filter presses work by using pressure filtration system technology. These presses have filter plates that hang on a steel frame, and the plates come in gasketed and non-gasketed designs. Gasketed filter plates help eliminate leaks, while non-gasketed plates make filter cloth installation faster as the cloths do not need to be pounded in.

The design of a recessed filter press is similar to that of a plate and frame press, wherein plates hang on a steel frame. The frames act as a clamping device, and both the presses utilize a hydraulic cylinder and pump to open and close the press. Each plate features a recessed area, and when the plates are pushed together; they form a chamber in which solids collect on filter cloths.

Working Principle of Recessed Chamber Filter Press

  1. During the filtration procedure, the slurry is pumped into the press through feed, generally in the center of the plate. The solids are distributed evenly in each chamber throughout the process.
  2. Solids begin to develop on the filter cloth and start to build a filter cake. The liquid is supposed to pass through the filter cloth selection and onto the drainage surface. The liquid usually exists the plates through corner ports into a manifold.
  3. When the right valves are open in the manifold, the liquid exits the press through the filtrate outlet. As the feed pump builds pressure, the solids form within the chambers until they are filled with filter cake.
  4. Once the chambers are full of filter cake, the filling cycle is complete, and the filter press is ready to be emptied.
  5. The press is then opened, and the plates are moved apart.
Advantages Of Recessed Chamber Filter Presses

A hydraulic power pack in a filter press machine controls the cylinders that help move the plates. It is self-contained and mainly consists of components such as a reservoir, motor, and hydraulic pump. It transfers power from one location to another using fluid.

  • One of the main benefits of chamber filter presses is its plate design's ability to feed a large center hole versus a small opening in the corner of the plate. The large holes allow the chamber to fill faster and evenly, with less risk of leakage and clogging.
  • Another main advantage of these filter presses is the ability to achieve higher feed pressure with the recessed chamber design. The frame of the recessed chamber plate is connected to the center web.
  • The recessed chamber filter press has got dry operation because of the gaskets or the latex edging on the cloth of a non-gasketed plate.

Recessed chamber filter presses and plates are effectively used in various industries. The filter press applications for this type of filter press include industrial wastewater, municipal wastewater, mining and energy, metal finishing, chemical processing, power, fabrication works, and much more. These filter presses hold various advantages over other types and are relatively easy to empty filter cakes. Also you can read our blog about Advantages and Process of Automatic Filter Presses.

What Are The Mainly Types Of Filter Press ?

The filter press machine is the equipment used for the separation method to separate solid and liquid. Filter press machine working consumes low energy, low to no human resources required, and high separation effectiveness of liquid filtering out, making it extensively used dewatering technology. Filter press is a widely used dewatering technology in papermaking, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage industries, mining operations, chemical industries, mills, marble, and stone cutting.

Advantages and Process of Automatic Filter Presses

The first and foremost type of filter press that is the Automatic filter press, differs widely from an old filter press machine. The basic structure, working principles, and process technology are similar to conventional press machines. In 1853 the British patent used the first form of filter press for procuring seed oil through various pressure cells.

Common Equipment & Accessories Used In A Filter Press Machine

A kind of mechanical equipment, a filter press machine uses a special filter medium to put pressure on the object to filter the liquid out. It is the most common equipment used for solid-liquid separation.
